With temperatures in Pueblo, Colorado dropping into the low 40s overnight, it’s time for homeowners to start thinking about winter. One of the first steps you should take to prepare your home for the cold weather is removing your window-based air conditioners.
When left in during the winter months, window ACs can provide an easy path for cold air to enter your home and warm air to escape it. This not only leads to uncomfortable drafty spots, it can cause your energy bills to skyrocket. Not to mention that exposure to cold weather can cause permanent damage to your air conditioner.
So how can you safely remove your window air conditioner and store it away for the season? Just follow these step-by-step instructions from the experts at Patterson Plumbing & Heating:
Unplug the air conditioner.
Remove the air filter and wash it with soap and warm water.
Clean dust and dirt off the front of the air conditioner using a wet sponge.
Place a towel on the floor directly underneath the window. This will catch any water that may leak out of your air conditioner in the following steps.
Remove any tape from the window sill and unscrew the AC from the frame, if necessary.
Carefully open the window, pick up the air conditioner, and place it on the towel. Have someone assist you with this step if your unit is too heavy to lift alone.
Vacuum the metal fins on the back of the air conditioner using a brush attachment.
Thoroughly dry the air conditioner and place it in a well-fitted box.
Store the air conditioner upright in a cool, dry place for the winter.
