Did you know that more than 100,000 different types of mold exist?
It’s true. Mold can range from the green fuzz on your bread to black slime in your shower, but they all have one thing in common: they can grow virtually anywhere moisture is present. This includes in your home, in areas such as the basement, washing machine, and especially your bathroom.
Mold isn’t just unsightly, it is dangerous to your health. Exposure to mold can cause short-term side effects including sneezing, coughing, irritated eyes and throat, headaches, dizziness, and nausea, but the real danger lies in the long-term effects it can have on your health – such as respiratory infections.
If you want to prevent mold from growing in your bathroom, here are a few tips you should keep in mind:
Run your exhaust fan for 15 minutes after every shower. This will help remove excess moisture from the air.
Stretch out your shower curtain. If you have a shower curtain, it is common for mold to grow in the folds, where air doesn’t circulate. Prevent this from occurring by stretching out the curtain from right to left after all of your showers.
Inspect your fixtures for leaks. Check the pipes connecting to your toilet, sink, and shower. If there is even a small leak, it can lead to a puddle of water, which invites mold to grow.
Squeegee your shower walls after use. This can remove up to 75% of the moisture that supports mold and mildew growth.
Seal your grout. If you have tile floors, sealing your grout lines every year with a grout sealant will help waterproof them.
