Looking to extend the life of your home’s appliances? Easy! Just make sure you’re giving them the TLC they deserve so that they can stand the test of time. See below for a few tips to get started »
Keep your fridge and freezer clean –
Appliances tend to operate best when they are clean. Regularly clean out leftovers in your fridge, wipe down shelves, and keep your condenser coils clear of dirt and dust. For your freezer – unplug it and remove all food and interior parts. Then give it a good wipe down with a homemade solution (2 tablespoons baking soda in 1-quart warm water).
Replace filters –
Whether it’s the filter for your air conditioner, your oven, or the one in your furnace – make sure you are replacing filters as directed in their manufacturer guidelines.
Use dish detergent in your dishwasher –
Detergents are special formulated for dishwashers, anything else will severely hamper the wash cycle (plus leave you with a sudsy mess). If you run out of dish detergent, try mixing 1 tablespoon Borax, 1 tablespoon washing soda, 1 tablespoon water, and 1 teaspoon kosher salt for a quick fix.
Take care of your washer and dryer –
Adding too much clothing to your washing machine can not only add strain on its motor but also won’t effectively clean your clothes. As for your dryer, make sure to clean the lint screen regularly. Failing to do so will force your dryer to work overtime plus can present a serious fire hazard.
