Where your plumbing is concerned, not all fixtures are created equal. Life expectancies of appliances and systems vary with usage, weather, installation, maintenance, and the quality of materials – some of which are out of our control. On top of that, sometimes there is no rhyme or reason why certain components last longer in your home than others.
Based on research and testing done by the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNACHI), the below are some guidelines of life expectancies for some of the most popular plumbing fixtures in your home:
- Toilet Tank Components – 5 years
- Water Heater (conventional) – 6-12 years
- Faucets and Spray Hose – 15-20 years
- Dishwasher – 9 years
- Washing Machine – 5-15 years
- Well Pump – 15 years
- Sump pump – 7 years
- Disposal (food waste) – 12 years
Preventative maintenance is key to prolonging the life of your systems. However, should you find any leaks or discover appliances that are well past their life cycle, it may be time to consider replacement.
