All good things must come to an end – including your home air conditioning system.
Sometimes the warning signs are written on the wall, but other times they are not so obvious. Be on the lookout for these four indicators that may signal you need to replace your air conditioner.
1). It’s more than 15 years old.
Even if you think your air conditioner is running fine, it may be a smart choice to replace it if it’s more than 15 years old. Earlier cooling systems are not as efficient as modern units, and could be costing you money due to their increased energy consumption.
2). Your energy consumption has been steadily increasing.
Has your cooling bill been slowly creeping up over the years, even though your demand has remained relatively constant? If your energy supplier didn’t hike up their rates, the spike in your bill could be caused by an inefficient air conditioner.
3). It is making loud noises.
It’s normal for your cooling system to make some noise as it operates, but an excessive amount of noise, clunking, grinding, and squealing are all cause for concern.
4). Air flow is weak, or air isn’t cold.
Sometimes, your air conditioner just reaches it’s limits. If the air isn’t as cold as it used to be, or the air flow seems weak (even on high), your cooling system has likely reached the end of its useful life.
