New year, new kitchen! If you have a kitchen remodeling project on the horizon in 2017, you are probably anxious to get started – just make sure not to make one of these costly mistakes.
Not accounting for workflow.
The three busiest areas in the kitchen are the sink, stove, and refrigerator. Many designers refer to these three appliances as the “work triangle,” because their location should be relative to each other for maximum efficiency.
Going over your budget, or not setting one.
Unless you are made of money, you are going to want to set a budget for your kitchen remodeling project. Decide on a total number you are not to exceed, then break it down into categories and set individual limits for cabinets, tile, appliances, contractor, etc.
Lighting is an underrated part of the kitchen remodeling process. If you have insufficient lighting, your new paint, tiles, and cabinetry might look different in your home than it did in the store. As a rule of thumb, all kitchens should have three types of lighting: overhead, task, and accent.
Cutting costs on your contractor.
During a kitchen remodel, there are a lot of places where it’s all right to skimp out. Your contractor is not one of these places. Your brand new kitchen will only be as good as the contractor who installed it, so it’s best to pay a little extra in order to get the job done right the first time.
