#WellnessWednesday – Is Your AC Making You Sick?

Imaging working in a building or living in a home with no methods to keep cool in the peak of summer heat? Doesn’t sound too appealing. As much as we rely on our air conditioners, truth be told they may not always be the best for our health, and here’s why:

1. Breathing Problems
If your AC is not cleaned properly and the filters are not changed regularly it can easily create an environment for all sorts of mold and bacteria.Once this bacteria and microorganisms go airborne, they can lead to a variety of breathing problems and potentially fatal infectious pneumonia. To avoid this, make sure you clean your units regularly and change out your filters every few months.

2. Fatigue, Headaches & Feeling Ill
Many individuals find that after a day at work, they are more tired than normal, have headaches, or generally feel ill. Often times office buildings with central air are set at a cooler temperature – which doesn’t always agree with the body. Try raising the temperature slightly and make an effort to step outside a few times throughout the day to regulate your body temperature.

3.Contamination
Since central air conditioning circulates old air instead of bringing in new, fresh air you are more likely to be exposed to pollutants inside your home. Mold, dust and other airborne infections now have the opportunity to circulate through your living space, exposing any individuals that come in its path. Try letting in a slow “leak” from the outside – open up a window a crack to get in some fresh air.

4. Dry Skin
Cold and dry air can cause your skin to lose its moisture. Thus the longer you stay in an air conditioned environment, your skin (and hair) may face the consequences. A quick fix for this? Get a great moisturizer and apply daily!

While there are some steps you can take on your own to maintain your air conditioning system, it’s best to leave the tune-up process to one of our experts here at Patterson Plumbing & Heating. How Dirty is Your Kitchen?

Dirty dishes in kitchen sink

Did you know, the dirtiest place in your home is actually your kitchen? Think about it, most of the food we prepare and consume happens in our kitchens – and where there is food, bacteria are sure to follow. From stomach unsettling bacteria to everyday cooking grime – the dirt is everywhere.

Follow these tips for making your kitchen squeaky clean:

  • Disinfect Your Sink! It’s your go to place for washing dishes and hands – but it’s also the dirtiest spot in the house. The sink is an easy breeding ground for E. coli and salmonella. Stop that bacteria in its tracks and disinfect it with a dishwashing soap, lemon, and baking soda combo until it shines.
  • …And the Drain – Just because you’re washing food and soap down the drain doesn’t mean it disappears. Often times food will stick inside and thanks to the constant moisture – germs are thriving. Pour a mixture of baking soda, salt, and water down the drain. Then flush it with hot water for 30 seconds. Bonus – you’ll also be eliminating any clogs.
  • Soak Your Faucet – Take the filter screen at the tip of your faucet and soak it in a diluted bleach solution every week to kill off bacteria. Just remember to let the water run through it for a bit after its finished soaking.

#WellnessWednesday – Health and Air Conditioning

When we think of summer and hot or humid weather – the thought of sitting in a cool air conditioned room is not far behind. But is being too cool good for you? Unfortunately, abusively low temperatures and poor maintenance have led to health problems and other daily irritations. But as long as you take proper precautions you should have a healthy start to this AC season.

Thanks to Hello Magazine, we have a quick list of the benefits and risks that come with air conditioning:

Benefits:

  • Improves comfort levels at leisure and at work – thus improving job performance
  • Can result in increased physical and intellectual activity
  • Lower temps reduce the presence of insects or parasites
  • A CLEAN air conditioning system helps exclude external allergens such as pollens
  • A properly installed and maintained system renews and improves air quality

Risks:

  • Sudden changes in temperature and humidity affect the respiratory system
  • It has a drying effect on skin and mucous membranes
  • Air conditioning an irritate the eyes (ie: contact lens wearers, risk of conjunctivitis)
  • Air conditioning is associated with throat irritation and hoarseness

To reduce the above risks, it’s important that air conditioned spaces are regularly ventilated. Rooms should be kept between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit as well as an average humidity of 60% – 70%. And as always, any installation or AC tune up should be done by a professional.

While there are some steps you can take on your own to maintain your air conditioning system, it’s best to leave the tune-up process to one of our experts here at Patterson Plumbing & Heating.
