Reducing Allergens in Your Home

Each year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America declares May to be National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month – and for good reason. With the excess of pollen and mold, this pre-summer month is peak season for asthma and allergy sufferers.

But not to worry! While you may not be able to prevent what’s happening outdoors, there are some things you can do to reduce and combat allergens in the home:

  • Clean! Give your home a thorough cleaning, including regular dusting and vacuuming. You may also want to have your carpets cleaned periodically and area rugs laundered weekly.
  • Replace filters! Clean and replace all filters for your AC or bathroom fan regularly.
  • Limit the clutter! Keep dust mites at bay by keeping surfaces in the home clean and uncluttered.
  • Close doors! Prevent entry of pollen into the home by keeping doors and windows closed.
  • Reduce moisture! Install a dehumidifier to reduce moisture around the bathroom, kitchen, or other water ares of the home. These work well in reducing both mold and dust mites.

As you prep your home to be allergen free, why not give us a call for annual air conditioning tune-up! We’re the Pueblo, Colorado area heating and air conditioning tune-up specialists, offering upfront pricing and clean and courteous technicians. Simply shutting yourself off from the outside world isn’t a cure all for allergies. The key? Work to rid the allergens from your home as well.

This Wellness Wednesday we wanted to provide some tips for easing your allergies at home – and how we can help:

Stay squeaky clean – Pollen sticks to everything. Showering, washing your hair, and changing your clothes can help if you’ve been outdoors with excessive pollen.

Sleep often – Not only does it relieve stress, but it also helps your body heal from fighting off allergy symptoms during the season.

Beware of the breeze – Easing up on your dryer usage now that it’s nice enough to hang clothes outdoors? Be careful! This can actually bring allergens inside. Be sure to wash bed linens in hot water and use the dryer to kill dust mites.

Filter it out – Use the air conditioner during warm, humid months to filter out 99% of pollen and allergen-producing fabrics in your home.

TLC for the AC – Remember not to take your AC for granted – it needs some TLC too! Changing the filter monthly and cleaning your air ducts annually is the best way improve your air quality and HVAC performance.

Use this allergy season as a reminder to schedule an air duct cleaning service with us. We’ll give your air duct system a full inspection to determine the level of contamination and follow a precise process for maximum cleaning results. We’re here to help you improve your home comfort!

Improve Indoor Air Quality With These Plants

Did you know, most of our exposure to environmental pollutants occurs from breathing air indoors? In fact, about 90% of time is spent inside; whether at home, the office, or other buildings – which is why indoor air quality is a significant concern.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the average person receives 72% of their chemical exposure at home – which means the place most people consider safest, is actually exposing them to the greatest amounts of potentially hazardous pollutants.

The scary part? 4.3 million people a year die prematurely from illness attributable to the household air pollution.

The good news? You can restore the air quality in your home by not only scheduling an air duct cleaning with us, but including some greens in your home decor:

  • Aloe – Easily maintained by the most novice gardener, this sun-loving plant helps rid formaldehyde and benzene – common byproducts of chemical-based cleaners and paints. Plus its gel is helpful for burns and cuts!
  • Spider Plant – This resilient plant requires absolute minimal maintenance and it battles a lot of toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, and xylene.
  • Gerber Daisy – This colorful bloom will help the air toxins commonly attached to your dry cleaning – place these in your laundry room or bedroom, just make sure it gets LOTS of light to grow properly.
  • Snake Plant – Perfect for the bathroom, this plant thrives in low light and humidity. It’s talents include formaldehyde filtering which is common in cleaning products, toilet care, and personal products.
  • Warneck Dracaena – Have a room full of varnish and oil – this plant is the perfect addition. It’s easy to grow even without direct sunlight and can grow to 12 ft tall – if you let it!

Don’t forget to give us a call to schedule your air duct cleaning. We’ll give your air duct system a full inspection to determine the level of contamination and follow a precise process for maximum cleaning results. We’re here to help you improve your home comfort!

As spring stretch’s open, people all over are bracing for another brutal allergy season. Many people opt for staying indoors to stay away from pollen or other allergens, but sometimes the air in your house doesn’t always offer an escape. Remember, the air in your home is recycled air. Each time your system kicks on, like a vacuum, it is not only pulling in air – but dust and other contaminants as well.
