Pueblo Colorado Housing Tips

Winterizing Your Home

iStock_000046050952_Large

Prepping your home for each season is important, and once the cold air moves in, it often doesn’t take long for your heating costs to skyrocket. Not to worry, there are many quick things you can do around the house to help conserve time, energy, and money this season:

Test for Drafts – Drafts can waste 5%-30% of your energy according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Check wall joints, light fixtures, outlets, window and door frames, attic doors, and plumbing penetrations for any air. Draft guards are great for drafty doors and for a quick fix, weather-stripping can fill gaps and minimize air infiltration.

Check Your Heating System – Keeping your home’s heating operating in top condition or installing a more energy efficient model not only keeps you warm, but saves you money on energy bills. Give the experts at Patterson Plumbing & Heating a call to perform a routine check before the real low temps set in.

Run Ceiling Fans in Reverse – Many ceiling units include a switch to reverse the direction of the blades. Clockwise rotations recirculates the air near the ceiling back into the living space – cutting heating costs by as much as 10%!

Lower Your Water Heater – Most water heaters are set to 140 degrees F, but typically, households don’t need that much steam. Adjusting your water heater to 120 degrees F not only reduces your water heating costs by 6-10% but also reduces the chance of receiving a scalding burn.

November is Child Safety & Protection Month

Two children playing with electricity

September brought Baby Safety Month, and now – we have child safety and protection month. The goal of this month is to create awareness about the potential dangers children face in everyday situations, including around the home.

As parents, we try to protect our children from all the dangers of the outside world, but sometimes we forget what could cause harm right in our own homes! Here are five tips to keep your child safe under your own roof:

  1. Install safety gates before your children start crawling to keep kids out of harms way (including at the top and bottom of all stairs)
  2. Keep storage bins around to hold all toys and supplies, preventing anyone in the home from tripping
  3. Cover up and lock it up. Any outlets should be covered and locks should be included on anything that can open (cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink? Don’t need little hands going in there).
  4. Be cautious of choking hazards. From coins, to jewelry, to crayons, to food – anything little can easily be swallowed, and just as easily lodged.
  5. Set your hot water heaters no higher than 120 degrees F to prevent burns, and consider spout guards on the bathtub faucet to manage the temperature of your child’s bath.

Your Home Energy Checklist for Energy Action Month

Dreaming Couple Framing Hands Around Ghosted House Figure in Grass Field.

Join us in celebrating Energy Action Month, a time we should work together to achieve greater energy security, a more robust economy, and a healthier environment for our children. Not sure how to participate? We’ve provided a list below of some things you can take care of within your own home – TODAY!

  1. Keep your water heater at 120 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Your furnace or heat pump should receive yearly maintenance – give us a call before the winter season kicks in full swing
  3. Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms and look to replace your normal light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) to save ¾ of electricity used
  4. Much like turning off lights when a run isn’t occupied – unplug appliances when not in use (chargers, coffee makers, printers, etc.)
  5. Install a programmable, ENERGY STAR labeled thermostat to adjust temperatures according to your daily schedule
  6. In the colder months, open curtains on your south facing windows during the day to let sunlight naturally heat your home (remember to close them at night to avoid chill from cold windows!)

These minor changes can promote energy efficiency to help the environment, improve your comfort, and keep cash in your wallet.

At Patterson Plumbing & Heating our plumbers, drain cleaning techs and home heating and air conditioning professionals can repair any problem with your home’s plumbing, furnace, boiler or air conditioning. Give us a call today at 719-544-4922.

October is Energy Action Month

Did you know, October is also National Energy Action Month? As part of this year’s campaign, WaterSense has launched their ShowerBetter initiative, encouraging people to save water AND energy by switching out old shower heads for a water efficient model!

We all know how important showering is – it wakes us up in the morning, helps us relax in the evening, and refreshes us after exercise. Showering accounts for nearly 17% of indoor water use – for the average family this equals nearly 40 gallons per day. Each time you or your family member steps into the shower, energy is used to heat and deliver water to your showerhead. Opting to install an energy efficient, WaterSense labeled showerhead can save 2,900 gallons of water and more than $70 in energy and water costs each year!

To save even more water, keep your shower under 5 minutes long.

These small changes can quickly add up in savings – not only for your own wallet, but can benefit the rest of the country as well. According to the EPA website, “If every home in the United States replaced existing showerheads with WaterSense labeled models, we could save more than 260 billion gallons of water and nearly $5.1 billion in water and energy costs across the country annually!”

Tulip House

Patterson Plumbing is your reliable plumber for ensuring you interior and exterior plumbing works perfectly. The icing on the cake is beautiful curb appeal that gives your a home that WOW factor. Since August is National Curb Appeal Month, we’re leaving you with a few quick upgrading tips to give you a home those driving by stop and stare at:

1. Rotting wooden front porch? Not thank you! Swap it for a new structural balustrade system, weather resistant and complete with all of the parts.

2. Your front door is old and wooden too? Try switching to fiberglass. Not only is it four times more energy efficient, it is also resistant to weather and rust. Consider picking an accent color to help make your home unique.

3. Color, color, and more color. Whether it be adding a custom color roof, shutters or just plants in the front yard, color makes a house pop. Plus, well maintained flower beds give a home a complete and lived in look. Overall, think top down. Start with the roof and work down, considering how you can add warm color to each of the exterior elements on your home.
