Pueblo CO Home Tips

5 Steps To Prep Your Home for Vacation

New Year, new vacations, here’s what you need to do to make sure your home is ready for your departure:

Plumbers Pueblo

Step 1. Pull the plug on all of your electronics. TVs, toasters, coffee pots, computers, etc., can continue to drain power even while in the off position. You’ll want to keep your fridge plugged in and perhaps some lights (on a timer) for security reasons, but all else can be unplugged.

Step 2. Tidy up before you go, including cleaning out your fridge and freezer, sink traps and garbage disposal. After being away for days the last thing you want to come home to is offensive odors from old food. For a DIY cleaning solution – mix half a cup of vinegar and half a cup of water and pour each down your drains.

Step 3. Lower your heat, but do not shut it off. To avoid freezing pipes set your thermostats to no lower than 55 degrees. If you have pets or house plants in the home, adjust the temperature accordingly.

Step 4. Turn off the water supply to your home – this way if you missed any small leaks before, you can rest easy knowing there won’t be a flood to return home to.

Step 5. Phone a friend – not only to stop by and check on your home (and feed your pets) in your absence, but also advise your in-home service professionals (alarm service)that you’ll be out of town.

The last thing you’ll want to do is come home to a disaster. Look forward to your 2016 travels knowing your home is prepared!

How to Make Your Appliances Last Longer

Looking to extend the life of your home’s appliances? Easy! Just make sure you’re giving them the TLC they deserve so that they can stand the test of time. See below for a few tips to get started »

Keep your fridge and freezer clean –

Appliances tend to operate best when they are clean. Regularly clean out leftovers in your fridge, wipe down shelves, and keep your condenser coils clear of dirt and dust. For your freezer – unplug it and remove all food and interior parts. Then give it a good wipe down with a homemade solution (2 tablespoons baking soda in 1 quart warm water).

Replace filters –

Whether it’s the filter for your air conditioner, your oven, or the one in your furnace – make sure you are replacing filters as directed in their manufacturer guidelines.

Use dish detergent in your dishwasher –

Detergents are special formulated for dishwashers, anything else will severely hamper the wash cycle (plus leave you with a sudsy mess). If you run out of dish detergent, try mixing 1 tablespoon Borax, 1 tablespoon washing soda, 1 tablespoon water, and 1 teaspoon kosher salt for a quick fix.

Take care of your washer and dryer –

Adding too much clothing to your washing machine can not only add strain on its motor but also won’t effectively clean your clothes. As for your dryer, make sure to clean the lint screen regularly. Failing to do so will force your dryer to work overtime plus can present a serious fire hazard.

#TuesdayTips – Prepping Your Home for Holiday Guests

iStock_000019071933_LargeWith a little over a week until Thanksgiving and just over six weeks to New Year’s Day, it’s time to start doing some de-cluttering and repairing to prepare your home for holiday guests. Use these tips below to reduce the holiday strain before the doorbell even rings!

Address any plumbing issues – Already working with a slow drain? Increase the number of guests in your home and this small problem can turn into a flood in the making. Make sure your plumbing is in good shape now, before the extra strain is added later.

Check the garbage disposal –  With all the extra turkey trimmings on the horizon, the last thing you want to deal with in the midst of holiday gatherings is a broken disposal. If you’re experiencing minor problems now, get it looked at. Otherwise, take a look at some of these maintenance tips to help you prep for the big feast.

Heating tuneup – Furnace due for a checkup? Give us a call! A breakdown is a problem at anytime, but even worse on a frigid day with a home full of guests.

Guest room check – If you are fortunate enough to have a spare guest room, you’ll also want to ensure there are a few spare hangers in the guest room closets. Luggage can take up space so clear some room before your guests arrive. Having people bunk on the sofa? Arrange an amenity area for your guests’ belongings and provide bedding storage for where blankets can go during the day when your sofa may be in use.

Don’t let a plumbing or heating mishap interfere with your holiday or seasonal plans – give the experts at Patterson Plumbing & Heating a call today!  Our team has helped Pueblo homes since the fall of 1984 and know that you and your home deserve to be treated with respect.
