What is That Smell Coming From My Furnace?

Be careful when you turn on your heater – that funny smell may be telling you that your furnace needs maintenance before the cold weather approaches. While it could be something as minor as a dirty filter – it also could mean you have a serious problem on your hands.

Keep an eye – or nose – out for these different odors especially if they persist!

Furnace filter

Furnace Air Filter

  • Musty odors: This scent typically stems from mold trapped in the furnace filter or humidifier filter. Try cleaning your filters and running a dehumidifier to see if the odor goes away. If the odor persists, it’s best to get a professional involved.
  • Electrical burning odor: This smell is most commonly due to parts or loose connections overheating. It can also be due to a dirty air filter. First, check your air filter to see if airflow is restricted. Then give your unit a visual inspection, look for any object that may have found its way on it and keep an eye out for melted wires. Give us a call for service.
  • Smoke or oil odor: If you have an oil furnace, there is an oil filter inside your unit. Smelling oil when your furnace is turned on can simply be due to a clogged filter that needs cleaning. A smoke smell is usually due to a blocked chimney. You’ll want an HVAC specialist to remove the blockage.

Remember, almost all heating systems cause an odor the first time they are put in use. If you’re worried about what you are smelling – the best solution is to give us a call.

How to Stay Healthy at Home During Cold and Flu Season

laundry and washing machineAs you probably have noticed from your sniffling neighbors, cold and flu season is well underway. While washing hands and increased consumption of vitamin C are great starting points, extra preventative measures can be taken around the home:

  • Disinfect – Think about parts of the home that are touched each day all day, doorknobs, faucets, light switches, remote controls, your computer keyboard etc. Wipe all these hot spots down with a disinfectant wipe.
  • Use ‘clean’ cleaning products – All this disinfecting doesn’t matter if you are using dirty supplies. Change out your mop heads and wash dish towels regularly.
  • Humidifiers are your friend – Help alleviate dry nasal passages with the use of a humidifier. Remember to clean them regularly to prevent bacteria.
  • Wash bedding – Wash your sheets, blankets, pillowcases as well as any furniture covers in hot water and put them in the dryer on a high setting.

So far in January, 43 states including Colorado are reporting widespread flu activity. If you or someone in your family is experiencing flu like symptoms, including a high fever, visit your physician. To learn more about flu signs and symptoms, click here.

Save Money On Your Heating Bill This Season!

Wood burning stove

We know how much Colorado weather fluctuates. While now, information on saving on your heating bill may seem irrelevant – once the winter chill officially sets in having this in your back pocket is sure to help you prepare for the fall/winter season.

Keep the below tips in mind when looking to save on your heating and energy bills:

Turn Down The Thermostat: Did you know you can save about 3% on your heating bill for every degree that you set back your thermostat? When you leave the house, turn your thermostat down and turn it back up a bit when you return home. There’s no need to heat the house while nobody’s in it!

Insulate: Make sure your home is properly insulated. Insulating is an affordable way to retain heat in your home. You can save as much as 20-30% on your heating bills by insulating your attic and basement.

Lower Your Hot Water Heater: We understand there is nothing better than taking a hot, steamy shower in the middle of winter to thaw out. However, keeping your water heater set to a high temperature is burning money faster than you can imagine. Sacrifice a few degrees for tremendous savings!

Turn On Your Ceiling Fan: Hot air rises! Turning your ceiling fan on in reverse can actually circulate warm air around your home.

Start A Fire: If you have a wood-burning fireplace in your home, start a fire! This is an inexpensive way to heat your home without turning up the thermostat.

Open Blinds and Curtains: Opening your blinds and curtains during the day will allow natural heat from the sun to enter through your windows. Close them at night to retain the warmth.

Our plumbers, drain cleaning techs and home heating and air conditioning professionals can repair any problem with your home’s plumbing, furnace, boiler or air conditioning. To learn more about what we can do for you, dial (719) 554-4922 today!
