November is Child Safety & Protection Month

Two children playing with electricity

September brought Baby Safety Month, and now – we have child safety and protection month. The goal of this month is to create awareness about the potential dangers children face in everyday situations, including around the home.

As parents, we try to protect our children from all the dangers of the outside world, but sometimes we forget what could cause harm right in our own homes! Here are five tips to keep your child safe under your own roof:

  1. Install safety gates before your children start crawling to keep kids out of harms way (including at the top and bottom of all stairs)
  2. Keep storage bins around to hold all toys and supplies, preventing anyone in the home from tripping
  3. Cover up and lock it up. Any outlets should be covered and locks should be included on anything that can open (cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink? Don’t need little hands going in there).
  4. Be cautious of choking hazards. From coins, to jewelry, to crayons, to food – anything little can easily be swallowed, and just as easily lodged.
  5. Set your hot water heaters no higher than 120 degrees F to prevent burns, and consider spout guards on the bathtub faucet to manage the temperature of your child’s bath.

Avoid Plumbing Disasters This Weekend!

Memorial Day weekend is perhaps the most popular time of year to throw a barbecue. And if you’ve invited friends and family over, you’re probably already feeling the heat. Don’t let a plumbing disaster cause you even more stress!

An influx in guests often puts more pressure on your plumbing – and the last thing you want to deal with on your Monday off is a backed up kitchen sink or a clogged toilet. While clogs often require the assistance of a professional to remove the blockage, there are still some steps you can take to remove or prevent one from occurring this weekend:

Sink Clogs:

  • Clogs can often be dislodged by using a sink plunger (smaller, differently shaped than a toilet plunger). Place the plunger over the sink’s drain hole, ensuring there’s enough water at the bottom to form a seal. Pump the plunger up and down – while keeping a good seal – to help dislodge a clog.
  • Whatever you do, avoid using over the counter drain clearing products! Instead, opt for hot or near boiling water. Pour this down the drain to try breaking up any organic compounds or soap scum. A combination of hot water and baking soda also adds more power to your drain clearing efforts.

Toilet clogs:

  • Use a plunger as your first line of defense with a clogged toilet. But if a plunger doesn’t work, a drain auger (commonly referred to as a “snake”) can be pushed in the drain to break up the clog. Be sure to use these carefully, while they wont harm your pipes – they may scratch porcelain or ceramics.
  • Toilets often endure items being flushed that should instead by thrown away such as paper towels or baby wipes. Those items can quickly block a drain line; especially in homes where tree roots have infiltrated the main sewer line.

Remember, Memorial Day isn’t just a day for backyard barbeques and celebrating an extra day away from the office – it honors the men and women of the US Armed Forces who have dedicated their lives to protecting our country. Take a moment during your Memorial Day BBQs to remember the sacrafices made. And if you do notice issues arising with your plumbing fixtures, give us a call at Patterson Plumbing & Heating today!

“How hard can it be?” A common question when considering doing a perceivable easy home repair. Unfortunately, many have found out the answer to this question the hard way. Top 10 Plumbing Problems & Causes

Turning on a faucet, adjusting the heat, loading the dishwasher – all things we don’t give much thought to… until there’s a problem. Many types of plumbing issues can happen in your home that easily can disrupt your daily routine.

At Patterson Plumbing & Heating, we know that many homeowners may not care to know all the details regarding their plumbing system – especially when you have us on call to fix any problems quickly and efficiently. However, learning a bit about common plumbing problems and causes can help in the long run.

Below we’ve listed the top 10 frequent plumbing issues, along with causes you can easily spot in your home before they get worse:

  1. No hot water – If your water heater is too small it will not be able to supply adequate hot water for your home.
  2. Clogged drains – Often caused by miscellaneous debris such as hair (in the bathroom sink) and food items (in the kitchen sink).
  3. Dripping faucet – Frequently caused by worn seal or a washer.
  4. Leaking pipes – Often times leaks are caused when connections to other piping loosens or the pipes have rusted; leading to the growth of mold.
  5. Water found in your basement – The source may be the water heater. Water heaters tend to leak when they are old and the tank has begun to rust.
  6. No heat – Homes with radiant heat will often have a boiler.  If the boiler isn’t heating the water, it is malfunctioning and requires maintenance.
  7. Running toilet – This take places when the flapper is not making a seal, causing water to run into the bowl.
  8. Toilet leak – This normally can happen by a wax ring that is old and worn.
  9. Dishwasher leaks – These leaks may develop if there’s a loose fitting or if a drain is clogged.
  10. Garbage disposal not working – This problem occurs when the unit is unplugged or needs a system reset.  If you hear a humming noise it’s most likely due to an obstruction or jammed disposal.
