Safety Tips for National Fire Prevention Week

Close Up Of Replacing Battery In Domestic Smoke Alarm

Did you know, research shows that half of home fire deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m? This week is National Fire Prevention Week and fire departments across the country are spreading awareness of the importance of fire safety and prevention. According to the National Safety Council, having working smoke alarms can cut the amount of deaths in a house fire by half.

With fire prevention in focus this month, we too want to stress the importance of installing smoke alarms outside each bedroom as well as keeping the below tips in mind:

Prevention & Safety Tips

  • Install smoke detectors outside each room, on each floor, and in the basement
  • Change the batteries in smoke detectors once a year
  • Test smoke detectors once a month
  • Know how to use a fire extinguisher
  • Plan an escape route for each room of the house.

During the Fire

  • Stay close to the floor to avoid breathing in heavy smoke
  • Lightly tap a doorknob before opening a door to avoid possible burns
  • Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes happen to catch fire
  • Stay at a safe distance from the house once outside

Although you may not realize it, leaks that aren’t repaired as soon as possible can cause a fire if the water comes into contact with any of your home’s electrical wiring – so be sure to get any leaks fixed fast!

Fire Safety This Holiday Season

Christmas candles and lights

It’s the time of year to deck the halls of your home in festive decorations, enjoy moments with friends and family, and partake in seasonal events and traditions. It’s easy to get caught up in the flurry of excitement, but it’s also extremely important to remember your safety, especially where fire hazards are concerned.

Christmas trees, menorahs, fireplaces, candles, and lights, are just a few things that come to mind when thinking about holiday decor and unfortunately, holiday home fires are a common occurrence. Head into this season with these preparedness tips from the American Red Cross:

  • Keep holiday decorations (like trees and candles) at least 3 feet away from heat sources in your home.
  • Don’t use any holiday decorations with frayed electrical cords and be sure to unplug your lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Keep curious children and pets away from trees and ensure your tree stands are sturdy enough to not tip over.
  • Keep anything that could catch fire – pot holders, oven mitts, food packaging – away from your stove top.

Additionally, smoke alarms save lives. Install a smoke alarm near your kitchen, on each level of your home, and near bedrooms (inside and outside if you sleep with doors closed). If you already have smoke alarms installed, use the test buttons and ensure batteries have been replaced.

heating-safety

As you know temperatures have been fluctuating quite a bit this week, from the 30s to the forecasted 60s later on. While we still have chilly nights on the horizon, it’s important to keep warm – but to do so while also knowing how to protect your home against potential heating system accidents.

In fact, the month of February is reported to be among the top three months where the most home heating equipment fires occur. Thankfully, with the below proper safety precautions, you can keep your home and family perfectly safe and warm until springtime:

  • Anything that can burn, keep at least three feet away from furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves and portable space heaters.
  • Have one of our expert technicians at Patterson Plumbing & Heating install space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment to your home.
  • Schedule an annual inspection every year with one of our trained experts.
  • Don’t forget to turn off any portable heaters when leaving or going to bed.
  • Install and maintain carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning, and be sure to test smoke alarms at least once a month to avoid any problems.

Keep your home warm and safe by properly taking care of your heating system and the surrounding space. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an inspection, don’t hesitate to give us a call today at 719-544-4922!
