Getting Home Ready for Vacation

5 Steps To Prep Your Home for Vacation

New Year, new vacations, here’s what you need to do to make sure your home is ready for your departure:

Plumbers Pueblo

Step 1. Pull the plug on all of your electronics. TVs, toasters, coffee pots, computers, etc., can continue to drain power even while in the off position. You’ll want to keep your fridge plugged in and perhaps some lights (on a timer) for security reasons, but all else can be unplugged.

Step 2. Tidy up before you go, including cleaning out your fridge and freezer, sink traps and garbage disposal. After being away for days the last thing you want to come home to is offensive odors from old food. For a DIY cleaning solution – mix half a cup of vinegar and half a cup of water and pour each down your drains.

Step 3. Lower your heat, but do not shut it off. To avoid freezing pipes set your thermostats to no lower than 55 degrees. If you have pets or house plants in the home, adjust the temperature accordingly.

Step 4. Turn off the water supply to your home – this way if you missed any small leaks before, you can rest easy knowing there won’t be a flood to return home to.

Step 5. Phone a friend – not only to stop by and check on your home (and feed your pets) in your absence, but also advise your in-home service professionals (alarm service)that you’ll be out of town.

The last thing you’ll want to do is come home to a disaster. Look forward to your 2016 travels knowing your home is prepared!

#TuesdayTips – For Preparing Your Home for Vacation

Traveling

Whether you have an upcoming vacation planned that will take you away for a weekend or a few weeks, there are some things you can do in advance to prepare your home for your absence to ensure a smooth return.

Use our departure checklist before leaving so you can rest easy on your vacation:

  • Clean out your fridge – Look for any food that will expire while you’re away and toss it. Wipe down the inside of your fridge if you spot any spills.
  • Lower the thermostat – Don’t waste energy while out of town, temporarily adjust the thermostat to a setting of 50-55 degrees.
  • Tidy the house – Sweep and vacuum, do all the dishes and laundry, take out all the trash, change your bed sheets, give your toilet(s) a quick clean, anything so you return to a clean, welcoming home.
  • Contact your security company – Let them know you are heading out of town. If you don’t have one, install a motion-activated sensor on an outdoor floodlight as well.

If you’re worried about leaving your home empty, call a friend, family member, or trusted neighbor to ask them to keep an eye on the house. Perhaps even ask your neighbor to keep their car parked in your driveway as a sign that someone is home!

Prevent Plumbing Problems While on Vacation

Summer vacations are on the horizon, but before you decide to pack up and head out for some relaxation – there are some things you may want to take care of at home first. The last thing you’ll want to do is come home to a plumbing disaster. So in order to avoid any kind of plumbing predicament while you’re traveling, here are some things you should do:

  • Inspect your home 1-2 weeks prior to leaving – Look at every appliance with a water supply and make sure there’s no corrosion on the water lines. Spotting a problem in advance gives you time to fix it before jetting off!
  • Turn off the main valve – This is the most effective way to ensure your home remains how you left it. With this valve off, no water should be coming into your home. This saves you from unexpected pipe leaks and bursts while you’re gone!
  • Check your water heaters – Make sure you don’t see any evidence of leaks surrounding it – if so, fix them promptly before vacation. As long as the water heater is operating properly, it’s a good idea to set the thermostat to a “vacation” setting so it won’t use energy to heat the water when you aren’t home.
  • Have someone check in! – Ask a friend, family member, or trusted neighbor to keep an eye on the house while you’re gone.

Once you take care of the above, call one of our experts at Patterson Plumbing & Heating to repair or inspect any issues you may find! This way you can spend your vacation enjoying yourself rather than being preoccupied with what could be happening at home.
