Unclogging Your Shower Drain

washing day

Clogged shower drains are a common problem that every household will have to deal with at some point – think about all of the things that get washed down it each time you take a shower.

Just because this is a common problem doesn’t mean that it has to turn into a headache. Use these quick fixes to turn your swimming pool back into a bathtub:

Use Your Hands
Before using any of the below methods, grab a screwdriver, flashlight, and rubber gloves. After unscrewing your drain stopper, shine the flashlight down the drain and look for a clump of hair sitting just below the surface. If this is the case, you can simply put on your pair of gloves and grab it with your fingers. If the clog is not immediately present, try one of the other methods.

When your toilet clogs, your first instinct is probably to grab the plunger. What many people don’t know is that a plunger can also be used to unclog a shower drain. Turn your shower’s water on for a few seconds so that the area around the drain is wet. This will help the plunger seal better. Place the plunger around the drain and give it 15-20 pumps, and recheck the drain with your flashlight to see if the cause of the clog is now visible.

Home-made solutions
If you can’t get it manually, you can let some common household items do the work for you. Make a mixture using a ratio of 1:1 parts baking soda and white vinegar and pour it down the drain. Cover the drain with a rubber stop or anything else that you may have in order to make sure your concoction stays in the drain (wash clothes work well too!). After letting it sit for 30 minutes, remove the cover and pour warm water down the drain to see if the clog has been eliminated.

Call a plumber
If all else fails, you can always call a local plumber. If you are in Pueblo or Fremont County, call Patterson Plumbing & Heating. Colorado’s leading plumbing company is just a phone call away at 719-544-4922. You can also schedule an appointment online and find additional information.

Fourth of July Plumbing Tips

Fourth of July weekend is upon us – time for BBQs, family parties, and of course, fireworks! Whether you’re hosting a neighborhood celebration or only inviting a few close friends and family to your humble abode, it’s a good idea to make sure your plumbing and appliances are ready to take on the stress from the influx of house guests.

Check over your bathroom plumbing – Clogged or running toilet? This is a recipe for disaster with additional guests in your home. While there are a few DIY fixes that can solve some problems, more complicated issues will need the help of a Patterson Plumbing & Heating professional.

Clean your drains – As mentioned in our recent blog post, cleaning your drains is important to do on a regular basis. With all the food, drinks, and dishes that will fill the sink tomorrow, it’s important to make sure it’s up to the task.

Do a basic appliance check – Visually look over all appliances, drains, fixtures, and pipes for any signs of damage. Leaks and cracks will prevent things from working properly – not to mention raise your utility bills! If anything looks out of the norm, give us a call to help identify the issue and recommend the best repairs.

Make sure your gas plumbing is working – If this isn’t working properly, you’ll have a rough time grilling. Whether you are using your indoor gas stove or outdoor kitchen area, this needs to be up to par before the party starts!

Avoid Plumbing Disasters This Weekend!

Memorial Day weekend is perhaps the most popular time of year to throw a barbecue. And if you’ve invited friends and family over, you’re probably already feeling the heat. Don’t let a plumbing disaster cause you even more stress!

An influx in guests often puts more pressure on your plumbing – and the last thing you want to deal with on your Monday off is a backed up kitchen sink or a clogged toilet. While clogs often require the assistance of a professional to remove the blockage, there are still some steps you can take to remove or prevent one from occurring this weekend:

Sink Clogs:

  • Clogs can often be dislodged by using a sink plunger (smaller, differently shaped than a toilet plunger). Place the plunger over the sink’s drain hole, ensuring there’s enough water at the bottom to form a seal. Pump the plunger up and down – while keeping a good seal – to help dislodge a clog.
  • Whatever you do, avoid using over the counter drain clearing products! Instead, opt for hot or near boiling water. Pour this down the drain to try breaking up any organic compounds or soap scum. A combination of hot water and baking soda also adds more power to your drain clearing efforts.

Toilet clogs:

  • Use a plunger as your first line of defense with a clogged toilet. But if a plunger doesn’t work, a drain auger (commonly referred to as a “snake”) can be pushed in the drain to break up the clog. Be sure to use these carefully, while they wont harm your pipes – they may scratch porcelain or ceramics.
  • Toilets often endure items being flushed that should instead by thrown away such as paper towels or baby wipes. Those items can quickly block a drain line; especially in homes where tree roots have infiltrated the main sewer line.

Remember, Memorial Day isn’t just a day for backyard barbeques and celebrating an extra day away from the office – it honors the men and women of the US Armed Forces who have dedicated their lives to protecting our country. Take a moment during your Memorial Day BBQs to remember the sacrafices made. And if you do notice issues arising with your plumbing fixtures, give us a call at Patterson Plumbing & Heating today!
