child safety month

November is Child Safety and Protection Month

While you may not realize it, there may be some hazards right in your own home – especially where your children are concerned. November is the official month for Child Safety and Protection, making it the perfect time to go over a few tips on how to keep your little one out of harms way.

Avoid falls—

  • Keeping areas such as the stairs and landings illuminated will give your child good visibility and help prevent a nasty spill.
  • Clutter isn’t fun to look at nor is it safe when you have a child roaming. Designating a spot for your children’s toys and teaching them to always put them away is an easy way to avoid a fall.

Unintentional Poisoning—

  • It is not uncommon for a child to try and go into places they are not supposed to. Cabinets containing cleaners, medication and other potentially harmful substances should always be out of reach or have a safety lock.
  • Having the Poison Control Centers number readily available is important for unexpected accidents. (1-800-222-1222)

Fire and Burns—

  • Ensure that your smoke alarms are working by testing them each month.
  • Make a fire evacuation plan with your children so they know exactly what to do and where to go in case of a fire emergency.
  • Keep your hot water heater set at 120ºF.

Choking and Suffocation—

  • Coins, garbage bags, latex balloons and hard round foods should be kept in a place that is unreachable by a child.
  • When you put your child to sleep, make sure you lay them on their backs. You’ll also want to make sure that your child’s crib is free of excess objects to avoid choking.

November is Child Safety & Protection Month

Two children playing with electricity

September brought Baby Safety Month, and now – we have child safety and protection month. The goal of this month is to create awareness about the potential dangers children face in everyday situations, including around the home.

As parents, we try to protect our children from all the dangers of the outside world, but sometimes we forget what could cause harm right in our own homes! Here are five tips to keep your child safe under your own roof:

  1. Install safety gates before your children start crawling to keep kids out of harms way (including at the top and bottom of all stairs)
  2. Keep storage bins around to hold all toys and supplies, preventing anyone in the home from tripping
  3. Cover up and lock it up. Any outlets should be covered and locks should be included on anything that can open (cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink? Don’t need little hands going in there).
  4. Be cautious of choking hazards. From coins, to jewelry, to crayons, to food – anything little can easily be swallowed, and just as easily lodged.
  5. Set your hot water heaters no higher than 120 degrees F to prevent burns, and consider spout guards on the bathtub faucet to manage the temperature of your child’s bath.
