The Secret Cleaning Weapon: Vinegar

Natural cleaners. Vinegar, baking soda, salt and lemon.

From freshening up your fridge to unclogging drains – white vinegar does it all. Just a small amount of this all-purpose cleaner, either as is or mixed with water, can replace many, pricier store bought products huddled under you sink.

  • Freshen your fridge – Mix a half water and half vinegar solution to clean the shelves and walls
  • Kill germs – Spray full strength vinegar around your sinks and bathroom tub to kill off germs. Just wipe clean with a damp cloth and vuala!
  • Remove buildup – Make a paste of 1 teaspoon vinegar and 2 tablespoons of salt to apply to sink fixtures to rid any lime buildup. Then, just rub with a cloth.
  • Unclog drains – Pour one cup baking soda followed by one cup white vinegar down your stopped drain. Cover with a washcloth and let sit for 15 minutes. Then flush with hot water.
  • Tidy your toilet – Remove stains from your toilet bowl in a pinch. Pour a cup or more of diluted white distilled vinegar into the bowl. Let it sit for a few hours or over night then scrub well with a toilet brush and flush.

Unclogging Your Shower Drain

washing day

Clogged shower drains are a common problem that every household will have to deal with at some point – think about all of the things that get washed down it each time you take a shower.

Just because this is a common problem doesn’t mean that it has to turn into a headache. Use these quick fixes to turn your swimming pool back into a bathtub:

Use Your Hands
Before using any of the below methods, grab a screwdriver, flashlight, and rubber gloves. After unscrewing your drain stopper, shine the flashlight down the drain and look for a clump of hair sitting just below the surface. If this is the case, you can simply put on your pair of gloves and grab it with your fingers. If the clog is not immediately present, try one of the other methods.

When your toilet clogs, your first instinct is probably to grab the plunger. What many people don’t know is that a plunger can also be used to unclog a shower drain. Turn your shower’s water on for a few seconds so that the area around the drain is wet. This will help the plunger seal better. Place the plunger around the drain and give it 15-20 pumps, and recheck the drain with your flashlight to see if the cause of the clog is now visible.

Home-made solutions
If you can’t get it manually, you can let some common household items do the work for you. Make a mixture using a ratio of 1:1 parts baking soda and white vinegar and pour it down the drain. Cover the drain with a rubber stop or anything else that you may have in order to make sure your concoction stays in the drain (wash clothes work well too!). After letting it sit for 30 minutes, remove the cover and pour warm water down the drain to see if the clog has been eliminated.

Call a plumber
If all else fails, you can always call a local plumber. If you are in Pueblo or Fremont County, call Patterson Plumbing & Heating. Colorado’s leading plumbing company is just a phone call away at 719-544-4922. You can also schedule an appointment online and find additional information.

Smart Ways to Clean Your Kitchen

When cleaning your kitchen, always start with the sink. An empty, sparkling sink becomes your kitchen’s model for hygiene and tidiness, motivating you to load the dishwasher immediately and keep counters, stove tops, and cabinet doors spick-and-span as well. For some smart ways to clean – see some of the below tips from Buzzfeed, just be sure to have baking soda, salt, lemons, or white vinegar on hand:

Natural cleaners. Vinegar, baking soda, salt and lemon.

Clean a stainless steel sink with baking soda – sprinkle baking soda evenly and scrub with an old toothbrush (or sponge) and voila! Clean sink.

Clean a stainless steel sink with salt and a lemon – Combine lemon juice and salt until the mixture reaches the consistency of toothpaste. Apply this to brass, copper, or stainless steel sinks and scrub gently. When finished, rinse with water!

Clean a garbage disposal with lemon and white vinegar – Slice lemons into small pieces and place them into an ice tray with white vinegar. Once frozen, pop out a few cubes and run them through the disposal every few days to keep it fresh!

Why Store Bought Cleaners Aren’t a Good Solution to Clogged Drains

While we understand the convenience of store bought cleaners for clogged drains, we strongly caution against them. Why you ask? Truth is that while yes they do technically work – it’s only a temporary fix. These cleaners are actually pretty detrimental to the longevity of your drain pipes!

These liquid cleaners are corrosive by nature, so the more you pour down the pipes the more they will erode the interior. The continue use of them will cause some significant long term damage. Over time, there’s a good chance you will have to replace your pipes due to the damage they have caused – and pipe replacement is significantly more pricey than a professional drain cleaning.

So what do you do when you have a clogged drain and not enough time to call our drain experts at Patterson Plumbing & Heating? Luckily there are a few natural solutions that get the job done, without leaving your pipes in danger:

Vinegar and Baking Soda Solution:

Pour a cup of baking soda and white vinegar into the drain. It will fizz immediately and will help remove gunk, hair, and any grime that has built up. Let it sit and then flush it with several cups of boiling hot water.

Salt and Baking Soda:

Mix 1/2 cup of table salt with 1/2 cup of baking soda and pour down the blocked drain. Let this sit and then flush it with several cups of boiling hot water. Much like the above treatment, this salt, baking soda, and boiling water will create a chemical reaction that should dislodge even the toughest of clogs!

If your clog is even tougher to remove than anticipated, that’s what we’re here for. Contact us today to have one of our specialists come by, diagnose the plumbing problem, make recommendations and prepare pricing by the job – not the hour – so there are no surprises.

Celebrate Earth Day by making some all-natural cleaning products to keep your home spick and span. Bonus, you likely have these cabinet staples in your home already:

Mirrors and Glass:

Mix one part white vinegar to one part water, spray, and wipe with a microfiber cloth. Don’t worry about the vinegar smell, it fades quickly!

Tub, Sink, Shower:

Combine 1 1/2 cups white vinegar, 1 1/2 cups water, and 3/4 cup hydrogen peroxide. If you want to scent the mixture, add your favorite essential oil – and just start scrubbing! For more tenacious soap scum, mix equal parts white vinegar with dish soap. Spray this mix and allow to soak before scrubbing and rinsing.

Mix two parts borax powder with one part lemon juice and add to your toilet bowl. After a few minutes, scrub to remove stubborn stains. For really hard to remove stains, add a cup of borax powder and let it stand over night before scrubbing the next morning.

Grout and Caulk:

Combine one part hydrogen peroxide to two parts water and spay on mildew infected areas. Let the mixture sit for at least an hour before scrubbing and rinsing.

Pour a cup of baking soda followed by two cups white vinegar down the drain. The fizzing should help loosen up any blockage. Let this stand in the drain for 15 – 20 minutes before flushing with warm water. Or pour 1/2 cup of salt and 1/2 cup of baking soda followed by 6 cups of boiling water down the clogged drain for an over night treatment.
