Easy Home Prep for Winter and the Holiday Season

We may be fairing well weather wise thus far, but soon enough winter’s cold temperatures will arrive. Prep your home for winter and the holiday season, try your hand at the following easy projects:

  • Maintain walkways – With the lack of daylight hours and the influx of guests, having a safe passage to your door is critical. Clear away any obstructions and install some lighting along your walkways. Now is also a great time to check and fill any cracks in your sidewalks or driveway to avoid water damage. Water can easily seep into these cracks in the colder months and freeze, expanding the cracks even more.
  • Prep your landscape – There’s still time to ensure your turf is in good condition before heading into the winter months. Applying a fertilizer with a high phosphorus formula now will encourage root growth so that your lawn can green quicker in the spring. This also helps it become more resistant to disease and drought.
  • Install outdoor lights – Pathways aren’t the only thing that need to be lit. Walking around outside your home in dark, snowy and icy terrain can be an accident waiting to happen. Install motion sensor floodlights in areas where you could benefit from some extra illumination.
  • Weatherstrip your doors – Over time, your door’s weather seals can wear out or tear – resulting in outside cold air free roam inside your home (or inside heat to leave). Easy enough for you, you can fix this in an afternoon. Learn how here »
  • Maintain your washer and dryer – Replace old rubber hoses from your washing machine and remove all lint from your dryer. Excess lint not only prevents your machine from drying clothes but it can be a serious fire risk. Disconnect the exhaust pipe and remove any lint you find, making sure the outdoor tube vent is free of obstructions. You’ll also want to clean out your lint filter after each wash.

Budget Friendly Bathroom Updates

You may think giving your bathroom an upgrade is a costly project. To some extent, it could be – but there are plenty of affordable ways you could give your bathroom a makeover regardless if you rent or own your home.

Take a look at the below budget friendly updates you can complete in a day’s time, no demo required:

  • Repaint surfaces – You’d be surprised at what a fresh coat of paint can do! Give your bathroom an easy refresh by changing up the wall color or painting over your cabinet doors. All you have to do here is remove drawers, doors, and hardware and sand down any loose or peeling paint before getting started. Follow with priming, painting, and reassembling – as detailed here »
  • Switch out hardware – Basic hardware, like toilet paper holders or towel bars, can be the first to really show age. If yours are looking a bit drab, change out any bars, hooks, knobs, etc. to something different to give your space a new feel (for minimal cost). You may want to purchase new hardware from the same company and collection to maintain a unified look.
  • Redo your floors – Vinyl flooring is not only extremely durable it’s also water resistant and requires little maintenance. And with installation as simple as peel and stick – why not give it a try! Most vinyl flooring has an adhesive that can easily go on top of your current floors – no demo required.
  • Accessorize – Now that you’ve changed up some colors, look for some accessories to match. New floor rugs, shower curtains, towels, or window treatments can easily make your space feel different.
  • Add storage – Increase your bathroom’s functionality by adding some additional shelving units above your toilet or under your sink. This is a good way to help de-clutter any counter space that could be an eyesore.

Bathroom Hacks: Unclogging Your Toilet

Woman in toilet

Find yourself with a clogged toilet and no plunger in sight? Take a breath, we’re here to help. We’ve got a few bathroom hacks to keep in mind in case you find yourself up the creek without a paddle:

Dish soap and hot water: This technique requires a toilet that is not overflowing. You’ll need to squirt some dish soap or shampoo into the toilet, followed by a gallon of very hot water. After a few minutes, the hot water should break up the clogged paper as the soap helps it slide down the pipe. You may need to repeat until all debris is gone.

Baking soda and vinegar: Long known for unclogging drains, this mix can also unclog toilets. Just pour your baking soda into the bowl followed with equal parts white vinegar. Wait a few minutes for the two to react and flush it with hot water. Repeat as necessary until the clog is released.

Give us a call: If all else fails and you fear a more serious clog, give us a call. Patterson Plumbing & Heating plumbers and drain techs are dedicated to technical and service excellence! Don’t Spook Your Plumbing this Halloween

It’s prime pumpkin carving season – but homeowners beware, putting stringy pumpkin pulp and seeds into your drain or garbage disposal can be pretty scary for your plumbing.

Pumpkin innards are notorious for getting stuck around disposal blades and clogging drains. Flushing pumpkin guts down the toilet is also another big no-no.  So avoid any plumbing mishaps, think twice before putting pumpkin pulp where it doesn’t belong!

If you plan on carving pumpkins in your household, keep the below tips in mind:

  • Spread out newspapers in your carving area before beginning – do this away from your sink, outdoors if possible.
  • Create two piles when carving – one for stringy pulp and one for seeds.
  • Dispose of the pulp in a compost pile or garbage can.

Now as a treat – save the seeds for roasting! Lay the seeds flat on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and other seasonings (salt, pepper, cinnamon, etc), and bake them in the oven until seeds begin to brown.

If you’ve read this too late – give us a call! The experts at Patterson Plumbing & Heating are here to help your Halloween be a little less scary. For any plumbing issues you may encounter this season, give us a call at (719) 544-4922 for fast service!

Reduce Your Energy Use at Home

Calculator with money - Energy

Did you know October is Energy Action Month? Help your household get involved, see below for some minor changes that you can make to help improve comfort, the environment, while also lowering your utility costs:

  • Schedule furnace maintenance with us! Since heating alone can account for half of a winter energy bill – you want to make sure it is in its proper, working condition.
  • Review ways to save on your water bills – from fixing leaks to updating appliances and changing water use habits. Learn more on our recent blog »
  • Clean or replace filters in your furnace, air conditioner, and heat pump.
  • Turn off and unplug appliances when not in use. Shut off lights in unoccupied areas (or install a timer) and unplug any equipment that still drains energy if left plugged in (ex: coffee makers, phone chargers, printers, etc).
  • Take advantage of natural light to heat your home! Open south-facing window curtains during the day to allow sunlight to heat your home. Close them up at night to reduce potential chill.
  • Insulate heating ducts in attics or crawlspaces – keeping them in good repair can prevent heat loss of up to 60 percent.
  • If you need to replace any systems, opt for ENERGY STAR labeled products which can cut energy bills by up to 30 percent.

Fall Maintenance Tips: Winterizing Your Home

When the seasons change, we not only have to prepare ourselves for the weather but our homes as well. Get a head start on winterizing your home, well before the harsher temps roll in:

house energy efficiency concept

Clean Your Gutters- When leaves are falling, the last place you think to clean them out of are your gutters. But over time, leaves and other debris can easily clog up your gutters which can prevent them from draining properly.

Check Heating Systems- This is the furthest thing from your mind in the summer, but come winter a malfunctioning heating system isn’t ideal. Make sure you are prepared for the colder temps to come and have your system inspected by a professional.

Drain Outdoor Faucets/Hoses- Any water left in outdoor faucets or hoses can expand when frozen, causing a pipe to burst. Be sure to drain water and store away garden hoses inside.

Seal Leaks- Drafty windows or doors can waste 5 – 30 percent of your home’s energy. Check around your home and add or replace any run down weather stripping to prevent cold air from coming into the house (and likewise, warm air from leaving!).

Patterson Plumbing & Heating is a full service company prepared to handle your winterization needs. Safety Tips for National Fire Prevention Week

Close Up Of Replacing Battery In Domestic Smoke Alarm

Did you know, research shows that half of home fire deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m? This week is National Fire Prevention Week and fire departments across the country are spreading awareness of the importance of fire safety and prevention. According to the National Safety Council, having working smoke alarms can cut the amount of deaths in a house fire by half.

With fire prevention in focus this month, we too want to stress the importance of installing smoke alarms outside each bedroom as well as keeping the below tips in mind:

Prevention & Safety Tips

  • Install smoke detectors outside each room, on each floor, and in the basement
  • Change the batteries in smoke detectors once a year
  • Test smoke detectors once a month
  • Know how to use a fire extinguisher
  • Plan an escape route for each room of the house.

During the Fire

  • Stay close to the floor to avoid breathing in heavy smoke
  • Lightly tap a doorknob before opening a door to avoid possible burns
  • Stop, drop, and roll if your clothes happen to catch fire
  • Stay at a safe distance from the house once outside

Although you may not realize it, leaks that aren’t repaired as soon as possible can cause a fire if the water comes into contact with any of your home’s electrical wiring – so be sure to get any leaks fixed fast!

At Patterson Plumbing & Heating, we’re available for all of your home’s plumbing and heating needs.
