How to Save on Your Water Bill

When it comes to saving money on your water bills each month, small adjustments can have a big impact. From fixing leaks to upgrading fixtures – see below for some simple ways to save:

  • Leaks – Did you know 10 percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day? Keep your home leak free by checking and repairing faucets, toilet flappers, and shower heads. Should you see any unusual increase in your water bills or meter – this may be your first clue your home has a leak. If you can’t seem to locate it – that’s where we come in.
  • Fixtures – Switching over to low flow, water-efficient fixtures uses less water per minute than older, traditional models. Consider installing WaterSense labeled shower heads and you could potentially save 700 gallons of water per year – the equivalent to 40 showers!
  • Appliances – When it comes to washing dishes or doing laundry, waiting until you have a full load to do is a better method for conserving water. An even better method? Choosing Energy Star-certified dishwashers and washers/dryers. These appliances tend to use 25% less energy (and less water) than the norm.
  • Habits – Above all, actively wean yourself away from bad water habits. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth or shave, limit your shower time, etc. You can also look into ways to recycle water – like saving water used for cooking pasta or washing veggies to water your garden or household plants.

For over 25 years, Patterson Plumbing has been Pueblo, Colorado’s go to company for plumbing, heating, cooling, water treatment, and remodeling needs. If you have questions about saving water in your home, think you have a leak, or need help installing some new energy efficient fixtures – give one of our expert technicians a call today: 719-544-4922.

Fall Maintenance Tips: Furnace

iStock_000019509393_Small

Don’t wait for the dead of winter to perform some furnace maintenance. After all, if you spot problems now you can ensure they’ve been fixed before you really need indoor heating.

Take some time out of your schedule this fall to maintain your furnace, using the below steps:

  • Replace your air filter monthly. If you are currently using a flat filter, you may consider upgrading to a pleated filter, HEPA filter, or electrostatic filter to increase your furnace’s energy efficiency.
  • Clean vents and ducts. Remove any dust or debris from your vents with the extension hose of your vacuum. Simply unscrew the vent covers around your home to clean and replace once finished.
  • Check the blower belt for cracks. First, turn off the power to your furnace via the main circuit breaker. Remove the steel cover of the air handler with a screwdriver and look for the largest rubber belt – inspect for cracks. Replace the belt if cracks are found.
  • Program your thermostat. Adjust your thermostat to automatically lower the temperature while you are sleeping or away from home. Home not equipped with this type of thermostat? Consider upgrading to one. Simply turning your thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees for 8 hours can save you up to 15 percent a year on your heating bill!

Fall Maintenance Tips: Water Heaters

Water heaters may be one of the appliances in your home you pay no mind to – that is until it stops working correctly. Routine maintenance is key to prolonging your units efficiency; if it’s not properly maintained, it may stop functioning all together or result in bursts of cold water when least expected.

With water heaters working extra hard in winter months, it’s important to prep them now before the real cold sets in. Add water heater maintenance to your fall maintenance checklist – just remember, while performing these tasks wear gloves, goggles, and other protective clothing!

Check the pressure valve – Whether you have a gas or electric water heater, a pressure relief valve is installed as a safety precaution. Should your tank over-pressurize, it helps to release some pressure. Without it working properly your tank could explode!

  • For an easy test, turn off the gas switch to pilot (or cut its electricity) then make sure to shut off the cold water feed to the water heater. Use a bucket to catch water from the pressure relief valve and position it underneath. Then, give the trip lever on the valve a pull. You should hear a slight rush of air or see some water and vapor escape through the valve. If not – drain the tank and have it replaced.

Flush the tank – Over time, sediment builds up in your water heater which can limit the amount your water heater holds, cause clogs, and reduce it’s efficiency. Periodically flushing the tank helps avoid these problems while also extending the life of your unit!

  • To do so, repeat the above – turn off the gas switch to the pilot (or cut its electricity) and shut off the cold water feed. You may want to wait some time for the water to cool down, then work on connecting a garden hose to the tank’s drain valve that can lead into a nearby sink or bucket. With the pressure relief valve open, open the drain valve and allow the tank to drain completely. Then, close the tank drain valve, disconnect the hose, and close the pressure relief valve. Turn back on the water supply to fill the tank and finish by restoring power to your sediment-free unit.

If you are unsure about anything regarding your water heater – give the professionals a call. Our Patterson Plumbing & Heating plumbers are gas and electric water heater repair experts. For over 25 years we’ve been helping families keep hot water flowing in their homes and can fix all makes and models! Contact us today for fast, friendly, and courteous service: 719-544-4922.

How to Maximize Space in a Small Kitchen

Wishing for more space in your kitchen won’t get you very far. It’s all about working with the space you do have. And we have some tips to help you manage your space accordingly!

iStock_000016023149_Small

De-clutter your counterMove your paper towel holder behind closed doors! Don’t worry, no skills are needed to install this – the holder simply clips right onto the cabinet door and holds itself in place. A coffee cup rack next to your coffee machine works wonders too!

Free up some cabinet space – Consider installing a ceiling mounted rack with a built in light fixture. This way you are able to hang glassware like wine glasses or lightweight pots and pans over head, without sacrificing cabinet space or light!

Add some shelving space – By inserting wire racks in your cabinets, you can really maximize space. With different heights and widths to choose from – you can keep different sized dishes and bowls stacked right on top of each other.

Install a pull out pantry – A slim pullout pantry can be installed in even the tightest of places. Keep all jars, bottles, and cans between appliances or other cabinets – while still conveniently reaching the items in the back!

Open up the room – Remove your kitchen door or better still – have the kitchen opening widened or a wall removed. This will open up more space to add additional functionality – think rolling island/cart that can be moved into place when extra counter space is needed or stored away if unused.

Had enough of your small kitchen? Give us a call! Our kitchen remodeling division, 5 Day Kitchens of Southern Colorado, will work with you to ensure your new remodel meets all of your home’s needs: 719-544-4922

Tips for Baby-Proofing Your Home

Exploring her new world

With young children in a home, it’s important to remember how dangerous ordinary things can quickly become. In honor of National Baby Safety Month, we want to provide some tips on baby-proofing your living space, at least where your plumbing and heating is concerned:

Cover Pipes. Exposed pipes can pose risk, especially the hot water pipes leading to your radiator. Securely cover them with pipe insulation to avoid burns.

Install Toilet Locks. Toilet seats and covers are blunt and heavy, that last thing you want to risk is your child squishing their fingers or even falling into the bowl and getting stuck. A baby proof toilet latch is the best way to keep your child safe.

Make Use of Baby Gates. Baby gates can easily block off areas of the home that aren’t appropriate for playtime, like the laundry room or surrounding stairs.

Secure HVAC vents. Ensure your air vents are screwed in tight, if they are lose their edges can pose risk. You may also want to use plastic air vent covers to prevent little ones from putting things inside.

Lower the Heat. To prevent scalds and burns, lower your water heater’s temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and to play it safe, continue to check the temperature of the water during bath time.

With the right preparation, your home will be safe for kids to roam. If you notice anything unusual about your plumbing or HVAC systems while taking the steps to baby proof, contact us. At Patterson Plumbing & Heating, we’re available for all of your plumbing and heating needs. Give one of our expert technicians a call today: 719-544-4922. FAQs About Your Drains

iStock_000017114217_Small

Most of us don’t give our drains a second thought – until we notice something unusual about them. At the end of the day, drains are an important part of your day to day life – so we want to make sure yours continue operating as smoothly as possible.

See below for some of the most frequently asked questions about drain cleaning that homeowners ask:

Why is water coming into my sink when I run the dishwasher?
Since there’s usually a connection between the dishwasher and drain from the garbage disposal, if food is left behind it can clog that connection. Before running the dishwasher – make sure your disposal is food free!

Are store bought liquid drain cleaners safe?
In short, not exactly. While they may provide a temporary fix – the reality is that over time the cleaner will actually erode and cause damage to your actual pipes. Opt for natural cleaning solutions to play it safe.

Why do I hear a gurgling sound in my sink after I flush the toilet?
Hearing this sound may not seem too alarming, but it can turn into a bigger problem if you let it persist. This noise is a common sign that the pipes aren’t properly vented – which can lead to blockage as well as slower water flow.

There’s a foul odor coming from my garbage disposal, help!
Odors generally come by a buildup of food debris. For an easy way to remedy the situation, try tossing a few ice cubes or orange peels into the disposal and letting it run for 30 seconds. This will help rid any debris, while providing a citrusy scent.

If you notice issues with your drains, get it taken care of as soon as possible! Contact us today to have one of our specialists come by, diagnose the plumbing problem, make recommendations and prepare pricing by the job – not the hour – so there are no surprises.

Thank you SO MUCH for getting our frozen pipes thawed this morning, and so quickly too!! We called 5 other plumbers before we called you and they were all busy. Next time we will call you FIRST!! Our technician John Volk was professional, friendly and very efficient. He did not even mind that it was only 9 degrees outside, he smiled and got the job DONE- Thank you!!!! Jim and Paula

Really? YES Really! Patterson Plumbing & Heating just replaced every galvanized pipe and fitting and replaced the water heater in my 70 year old adobe home. From the first phone call until the job was completed (basically 2 days ) I felt valued as a customer and I felt my humble little home was treated with respect. From the main line, which had to be accessed by hand digging from the street, under an adobe wall around my front yard, throughout the entire house, which is a partly finished basement and a dirt crawl space, all pipes were replaced. The Team Leader, Tony, arrived on time as did his crew, each day they were here. The first day they arrived at 8:30 am, took a 20 minute lunch, and stayed until I had hot water and a flushing toilet, they left at 9:00 pm! The old pipes were very corroded, after seeing inside, I am surprised any water could get through at all and I can’t believe I was drinking it! Not only did they do a terrific job ( I now have incredible water pressure and water that tastes great and hot water again, yay!)Tony also leveled my washing machine and stabilized the kitchen facet that I had installed, and they put my yard back together so there is barely any sign there was a 4ft ditch in it yesterday! Thank you for a very professional job, and providing financing so I am able to afford the improvements. Much gratitude!!! Karen

My husband was given permission by the VA to have a new handicap shower installed. We called PPH/Rebath to have it done. They were wonderful at helping us get it oked and all the paper work sent in. Then when they came out to put the shower in they sent Neil T and his helper out to the house. They were so polite and helpful I was very surprised. They worked quietly and cleaned up every single bit of debris and dust that I didn’t even have to sweep when they left. They were very courteous and cleanly dressed in there company dress that it impressed me very much. The shower is beautiful and is just what I wanted it to be and they did it in just 2 days. Amazing. Need any shower installed, they are the greatest in my opion. Thanks PPH/Rebath and Neil T – Bennie
