Summer Plumbing Tips

Family Having Fun Playing In Garden

When thinking about the summer, plumbing issues likely aren’t the first thing to come to mind. Yet warmer months tend to be prime time for plumbing problems that may not occur during the rest of the year.

Protect your home and property from any issues this summer by keeping the below in mind:

Washing Machine Maintenance
Spending more time outdoors can lead to more loads of wash – and you’ve got to make sure your washing machine is prepared. Check its hoses for any leaks, cracks, or bulges. If you haven’t replaced the hoses in the last several years, now may be the time to do so.

Clogged Disposal
Be cautious of what is thrown down your garbage disposal, especially after cookouts. Remember, stringy foods (think corn husks, celery, etc) can easily wrap around the blade, clogging the drain. Greasy foods should also be avoided as they leave a film over the disposal’s blades, diminishing their effectiveness.

Standing Water
Give your yard a thorough inspection for any areas that are too wet and with unusual plant/grass growth. This could mean you have a standing water problem, commonly from a damaged sewer line. Standing water is not healthy for children or pets and can be a breeding ground for pesky insects!

Clogged Toilets
Household toilets are used more regularly in summer months – what with children home from school. Make sure all members of your household aren’t overusing the toilet paper and are flushing only after they actually use the bathroom.

Following these tips will keep your home’s plumbing system running smoothly this summer. If you do run into a problem, don’t hesitate to contact Patterson Plumbing and Heating at (719) 544-4922. Like us on Facebook for even more plumbing tips.

Protect Your Plumbing Before Traveling This Summer

Between choosing the destination, finding flights, booking hotels, and creating itineraries, planning a vacation involves a pretty intensive checklist. One thing to tack on the end of your list? Preparing your home for your absence.
Open suitcase on bed
No matter how long you’ll be gone, there are some steps you can take beforehand to protect your home and plumbing:

  • Visible Cues – Lights, the yard, locks – make sure all visible elements are prepared. A continually dark house, an overgrown lawn, and open windows can be a signal to a burglar that no one is home. Set some lights on timers, trim your lawn short, and make sure all windows and doors are shut and locked before you leave.
  • Water Heater – Don’t run up your home’s energy bill! Set your water heater’s temperature to “vacation mode.” This doesn’t turn it off completely but rather prevents it from using energy to heat the water while you’re away.
  • Toilets – In general toilets can collect bacteria, resulting in stains, let alone when you are out of the house and water inside is left stagnant. Before departure, clean your toilet by pouring half a cup of chlorine in the bowl (not tank). If gone for a long period of time, have your house sitter or trusted neighbor come by for a flush.
  • Plumbing – Check for leaks and anything out of the ordinary to get repaired. It’s also a good idea to turn off the water at the main shut-off valve. This saves you from unexpected pipe leaks and bursts and thus – a flooded home – while you’re away.

The last thing you’ll want to do is come home to a plumbing disaster. Let the experts at Patterson Plumbing & Heating give you a hand now, so you can spend your vacation without a worry in the world (other than which new restaurant to try!).

3 Air Conditioning Myths

thermostat cost

With the first day of summer just days away and the heat already taking it’s toll – you may have started cranking your air conditioners. So in preparation for another hot summer season, many people are going to be looking to keep cool while keeping costs down.

As such – before you make any major changes to your home’s air-conditioning, here are a few myths to watch out for:

Myth: Upgrading to a larger unit will provide better results.

Fact: If you resort to upgrading to a larger unit – you won’t be cooling your home effectively and instead, increasing your energy use! As with any appliance, your AC needs some TLC. Before you think it’s time to replace your air conditioner, give it a good cleaning and call us for a tune-up. Also be sure to check for any cracks or air leaks around the windows and home. Poor insulation can let the air escape.

Myth: Cranking the temperature down will cool my home faster.

Fact: Central air conditioners are designed to work consistently to reach your desired temperature, then shut off. That being said, turning the temperature down won’t actually cool it faster – but rather make your home frigid when it finally does reach that setting. If you use window units however, switching to a high setting WILL cool it faster (just make sure to readjust when comfortable).

Myth: It’s more efficient to leave your AC running all day than to raise/lower the temperature.

Fact: Programmable thermostats are a great way to save money on energy bills during both the winter and summer months. Take advantage of setting your thermostat while you aren’t home to dramatically cut down on energy usage.

Easily Avoidable Plumbing Mistakes

A flooded basement or needing professional help with water lines during a renovation are good reasons to call a plumber. However, sometimes you reach for the phone in a panic due to situations that could have easily been avoided! Below are some of the most common plumbing errors to keep in mind so that you can work to avoid them:

Treating the garbage disposal like a trash can: Despite it’s name, not all garbage should go down the garbage disposal. While you may know the rules of your garbage disposal use – if you have guests at your home, make sure they know as well!

Not removing the disposal plug: Since installing a garbage disposal doesn’t require advanced plumbing skills, many homeowners take care of this on their own. However if the unit is to be connected to a dishwasher, a knockout plug in the disposal must be removed first. If it isn’t, water will leak everywhere.

Placing too much weight on fixtures: Be cautious of how many things you stack onto your shampoo racks that hang from the shower head. Too much weight can damage the shower head as they are not meant to hold weight. Same goes for resting your feet on the bathtub spout as a footrest.

Forgetting how things go back together: Taking apart plumbing components is easy – wish we could say the same about putting them back together. One thing that could help is documenting the exact disassembly process (either by writing things down or taking photos).

While there are plenty of home projects that don’t require advanced skill sets – there are equally some things that are better off left to the professionals. If you have a serious plumbing job to be done, don’t risk making a costly mistake – give us a call first!

At Patterson Plumbing & Heating our plumbers, drain cleaning techs and home heating and air conditioning professionals can repair any problem with your home’s plumbing, furnace, boiler or air conditioning. Give us a call today at 719-544-4922.

Must Haves in Your Bathroom Remodel

No matter the size, a great bathroom combines comfort, style, and function. If you’re looking to remodel your bathroom, make sure it checks off each of the previous points by including these must haves in your decision process:iStock_000022564434_Large

Walk-in Shower: A tub can make an already small bathroom feel smaller and cluttered. Since walk-in showers take up only a fraction of the space, you’ll have the ability to make your bathroom look more luxurious – thus increasing its comfort and functionality.

Vanity Mirrors: Having additional hidden storage for medicine, makeup, and other knick knacks is a great way to stay organize without sacrificing space.

Eco-friendly Fixtures: Did you know the average family could save 2,900 gallons per year by switching to low flow toilets, faucets, or shower heads! Choosing fixtures with the WaterSense label is a great way to save money on monthly water and energy bills.

Natural Light: A little bit of sunlight goes a long way in improving the look and feel of your en suite. Choose a window design that doesn’t sacrifice privacy while letting light in or look into skylights as an option.

Had gas leak over Memorial Day holiday. Didn’t think I’d even get an answer at PP&H but did. Lady answering phone very nice & sounded sincerely sorry about my problem. Office called me prior to coming out & Greg C. arrived right on time. PP&H gave me a courtesy call each & every time prior to coming out which I appreciated. Greg C. was the technician, arrived when he said he would, checked everything out, told me what he would do & did EXCELLENT WORK. He told me when he would have job done, called City Inspector ahead of time so there would be no delay in getting my gas turned back on. Another employee, Neil, was out the second day and he too, had the same EXCELLENT work ethic as Greg C. Greg never stopped working, showed pride in his work & told me he liked doing gas work…it was very obvious!! He knew I was uneasy with natural gas & was very reassuring, telling me the job would be done right & I could call back for any concerns at any time. My house is old & work done when originally built was unsafe. Greg would tell me what he was going to do before and showed me the pipe he removed which was horrible. Greg C. was friendly, knowledgeable about the gas work he was doing and his work was excellent! I liked that PP&H employees wear uniforms, are drug tested & KNOW what they’re doing. Greg C. is such an asset to PP&H & I’d like Mr. Joe McGee & Rick Patterson to know how fortunate they are to have such an employee. You can’t put a price on “peace of mind” & I will most certainly recommend PP&H & especially Greg Copas to others any chance I get. – Loraine

Tim M with Patterson Plumbing gave excellent service. Was efficient, courteous and prompt. Will certainly call on him again when needed. – Sylvia
