No hot water, leaking toilets, cracked pipes – when plumbing problems occur in the home, it’s not uncommon to feel panicked. Having a functional, smoothly operating plumbing system isn’t just a luxury, but a necessity for going about your daily routine successfully.

See below for some of the most common plumbing problems and ways you can troubleshoot prior to giving us a call!

No Hot Water – One of the biggest reasons for customer phone calls is not having hot water, or inadequate hot water. Some possible causes can be a faulty gas pilot (make sure your pilot light is lit), the temperature setting is too low, or the water heater may not be big enough to meet one’s needs. Contact the experts at Patterson Plumbing and Heating to diagnose the problem with your water heater.

Clogged Drains – Another popular plumbing problem, clogs can often be avoided by being cautious of what is put down them. Try using our recommended natural solution to de-clog, then give us a call to make sure another clog isn’t in your near distant future.

Leaking Pipes – This problem can easily cause extensive damage to your floors, walls, and belongings. Be sure to check your pipes periodically for signs of rust, indicating the beginnings of a leak. Should you come across a leak, give us a call – it’s better to fix a small leak now than wait for it to cause a big problem later.

No Heat – One of the last things anyone wants to deal with in a Colorado winter. To combat this, it’s important to have your annual heating system tune up to make sure everything is in working order. If you haven’t had your heating system tune up yet, call us today before the temps start to plummet.

New Year, New Resolutions – Tips for Saving Money

blank list of resolutions on blackboard

It’s a tradition each New Year’s Eve to plan out a resolution or two for the year ahead. Most plan to exercise regularly, volunteer more, or finally cross an item off their bucket list. Many also pledge to save more money.

To help you get a jumpstart on your New Year’s resolutions, we have some tips to help you save money quickly, easily, and right in your own home – by reducing your energy costs this winter:

Adjust the thermostat – By simply turning down your thermostat 10 – 15 degrees for eight hours, you can save about 10% per year on your heating bills. You can do this overnight – just opt for flannel sheets, thicker comforters, and warmer PJs, or if you are away for long periods of time during the day at work/travel.

Only heat the rooms you use – Have a spare guest room or office space that has instead turned into a storage area? Close and seal off the vents in those rooms to be more energy efficient and instead direct the flow of air to the rooms you use most.

Turn it off! Keeping lights and appliances off when not in use is one of the best habits you can develop. Unplug your computer, TV, toaster oven, microwave and any other appliances to protect them from power surges. According to the Consumer Energy Center, many appliances can use power even if they are turned off.

Eliminate drafts – Drafts can waste 5%-30% of your energy according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Draft guards are great for drafty doors and for a quick fix, weather-stripping can fill gaps and minimize air infiltration. Also, be sure to keep the damper closed on your fireplace when not in use to eliminate drafts through the chimney.

Get efficient – If you know you are in the market for upgrading your appliances and fixtures – go the energy efficient route. Refrigerators, ovens, washers and dryers as well as toilets, shower heads and faucets all have  energy efficient options available.

Patterson Plumbing & Heating is a full service company prepared to handle your winterization needs. We are able to repair the smallest heating problem to the largest heating problems. We’re experts on all brands, makes and models. When you need us, we’ll be there..

Keeping Your Home Safe While Traveling

Your much anticipated vacation is just about here – time to put up the out of office responder, pack your bags, and of course prepare your home. After all, the last thing you want to worry about after leaving a stress free vacation is returning to some kind of home disaster.

Simple preventative measures can work wonders in helping avoid broken pipes, power surges, and more – plus, they only take minutes to complete!

Fix leaks now – The best time to repair leaks is when you encounter them, not waiting until matters get worse. Check faucets in your bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room for any drips or puddles, then give your friends at Patterson Plumbing & Heating a call.

Adjust your thermostat – To save on energy use while you’re away, turn down your thermostat (but NOT off!). Setting it to 50-55 degrees will keep your appliances and pipes from freezing.

Get an automatic light timer – While you don’t want your home to look unoccupied, you also don’t want to rack up your energy bill by leaving some lights on. Get an automatic light timer that can turn certain lights on and off automatically according to a programmed schedule.

Pull the plug – Unplug your computer, TV, toaster oven, microwave and any other appliances to protect them from power surges. According to the Consumer Energy Center, many appliances can use power even if they are turned off.

Phone a friend – A simple way to really gain peace of mind while you’re away is asking a friend or neighbor to keep an eye on your house. Give this person a key to bring in your mail and check for anything out of the ordinary. Also be sure to give them your contact information and a copy of your travel itinerary in case of serious emergencies.

Once you have the above in order, give one of the experts at Patterson Plumbing & Heating a call to repair or inspect any issues you may find! Look forward to your upcoming vacation knowing your home is all taken care of.

The Guide to Winter Maintenance

Happy parents and teenage son warming near warm calorifer

Tis the season for gathering with friends and family near a warm fire. But this is also prime time for Mother Nature to wreak havoc on our homes and even our health. Follow the below winter maintenance checklist, courtesy of Angie’s List, to protect your most valuable assets this season:

HVAC System –

Call for an inspection: Lack of proper HVAC maintenance is one of the number one reasons for “no heat” calls. Not only does calling for an inspection help ensure everything is in good working condition, but it can also detect potential health hazards (ie: carbon monoxide leak).

Change Dirty Filters: Switching to clean filters helps your system operate more efficiently and thus reduces your energy costs. More importantly, a cleaner filter means improved indoor air quality!

Check Ductwork: Make sure all ductwork is sealed at joints and intersections to prevent heated air from leaking. Your warm air may be seeping out into the attic or crawl space – where it’s not needed. Or, the cold outside air can be drawn in instead. Either way, this increases your heating costs and reduces your indoor comfort.

Plumbing

Insultate Exposed Pipes: Pipes located in unheated areas are the most likely to freeze, while pipes that have been frozen in the past are more susceptible, now, to damage. Adding heat tape to these pipes prior to insulating can offer an extra layer of protection. Be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions.

Keep Cabinet Doors Open: If you have small children, remove anything that could be hazardous. Otherwise, open cabinet doors below the kitchen and bathroom sinks to help warm air circulate around those pipes.

Locate Your Shut Off Valve: If you have a winter retreat planned that will be taking you away from the home, shut off the water at the main shut-off valve to prevent any emergencies while you’re away!

Make the Most Out of Small Kitchen Space

A small kitchen has its advantages – everything is within arms reach, its cozy, and there’s not a lot of counter space or floor tile you need to scrub clean. However it also can be tough making things NOT feel cluttered.

Make the most of your small space while adding beauty to your kitchen with these creative ideas from Better Homes and Gardens:

1 (1)

  1. Hanging storage – Keep bulky pots and pans hung overhead and everyday items in reach by attaching them to your backsplash. Now you’ll never replace that 1/4 teaspoon again.
  2. Create a sliding spice rack – Ditch the lazy susan and utilize a handy pullout cabinet to store spices, oils, and herbs within arms reach.
  3. High storage – Top a window or doorway between rooms with a wide ledge for storage and display.
  4. Use chalkboard paint – Whether on the back of your pantry door at the end of a row of cabinets – utilize this space for jotting down notes and grocery lists all while adding some design to your kitchen.
  5. Creative counter space – Stow and go solutions are a must in a small kitchen space. Consider adding a rolling cart that stays tucked away under a center island to provide additional workspace as needed. Bonus it can be wheeled throughout the kitchen for where you need it, when you need it.
  6. Wine storage – If you have a tiny, narrow cabinet – remove the door, add some small shelves and viola! You have the perfect spot for storing extra wine bottles

The Secret Cleaning Weapon: Vinegar

Natural cleaners. Vinegar, baking soda, salt and lemon.

From freshening up your fridge to unclogging drains – white vinegar does it all. Just a small amount of this all-purpose cleaner, either as is or mixed with water, can replace many, pricier store bought products huddled under you sink.

  • Freshen your fridge – Mix a half water and half vinegar solution to clean the shelves and walls
  • Kill germs – Spray full strength vinegar around your sinks and bathroom tub to kill off germs. Just wipe clean with a damp cloth and vuala!
  • Remove buildup – Make a paste of 1 teaspoon vinegar and 2 tablespoons of salt to apply to sink fixtures to rid any lime buildup. Then, just rub with a cloth.
  • Unclog drains – Pour one cup baking soda followed by one cup white vinegar down your stopped drain. Cover with a washcloth and let sit for 15 minutes. Then flush with hot water.
  • Tidy your toilet – Remove stains from your toilet bowl in a pinch. Pour a cup or more of diluted white distilled vinegar into the bowl. Let it sit for a few hours or over night then scrub well with a toilet brush and flush.

#TuesdayTips for an Over-Flowing Toilet

Plumber uncloging toilet

We’ve all been there, that suspenseful moment when you flush your toilet and the water begins to rise higher… and higher… Having a toilet overflow isn’t uncommon but never the less isn’t something you hope for. Should you come across a toilet overflow emergency, follow the below steps:

Locate and turn off the water shut off valve – Typically located near the base of your toilet, but if you don’t have one open the tank and rig the float to stay in the proper position to prevent additional water from filling the tank.

Clean up any spills – If water has spilled over onto the floor, clean it up immediately. Be sure to wash and disinfect any part of the room that was dampened by toilet water.

Start plunging – Often times a clog is the culprit of the overflow, so take a toilet plunger to free up the clog.

Call a professional – If the above steps aren’t successful, it’s time to give the experts at Patterson Plumbing & Heating a call. We hire the absolute best drain cleaning technicians, give them the best training and tools to serve you and unclog your drain problems.

It’s easy to forget your sewer and drain lines until it’s too late and they get backed up, clogged or plugged! We can clear drain problems and stopped-up drains fast. Our drain cleaning technicians are clean, courteous, and expert sewer and drain specialists. Contact us today:  719-544-4922.
